  Myself and 10 friends dined at the Hamilton Russell on a Monday and chose to have the food from the special Steak Night. Everyone commented how well the food was cooked, and as a bottle of wine for two was part of the deal, we only paid £12.50 each for a rump steak, lovely fat chips and trimmings as well as a half a bottle of Hardys wine each.
  The staff were very friendly and the service couldn't be beaten.
  We enjoyed ourselves so much we are going back on Wednesday to sample the Curry Night.
  The new owners of the Hamilton Russell are very pleasant and it is obvious they have a will to improve things. If they keep on producing good food at a good price like we have recently sampled they have 11 converts. Well done the Hammy.

  I have dined at the Hamilton Russell a few times with my husband; once on an evening and a few times during the day. I have always been impressed with the service here; the staff are very friendly and helpful. The menu is large, although I don't like the way that it is written on boards all around the room instead of on paper menus, as it feels like you're leaning over people who are having their meal just to see what food there is!
  
  We have some had lovely lunches there, it is really nice sitting in the small beer garden at the back looking out over the countryside on a sunny afternoon. The meals are not overly expensive, and although the portions aren't huge they are probably just right for most appetites. The pub is very popular and most people I know have dined there at some point; I've never heard a negative review of the place. Although I wouldn't say it is my favourite place to eat in the area, it's well worth a look.

  I have had my Sunday dinner in here a couple of times. Its good honest food, not cheap but not expensive. The Sunday dinner was lovely, I was especially fond of the cabbage!
  Good drinks and a pleasant atmosphere. Staff were good and helpful. If you are looking for somewhere nice to eat I would recommend this, as the earlier reviewer said its not a chain so enjoy!

  Having seen a couple of the previous reviews, I thought it only fair to add my views as well.
  
  I am also a regular diner at the Hamilton Russell, although I would have to say on a more frequent basis than the other reveiwers, usually once a week or more. The Hamilton Russell is one of a last bastion of English Pubs, who have not sold out to the sterile and faceless chains, nor tried to go overly up market in a vain attemp to stand out from the rest. This has however cost them, by making it more difficult to be consistent, a problem I am sure they are working to fix. This is not the first time over the last 15 years that change has been necessary nor for that matter smooth.
  
  As for the food it is basic, but the majority is prepared fresh and is tasty, as I'm sure nearly all of the 100,000 plus people who dine there over a year would agree. I have never had any great cause for complaint and when I have it has always been dealt with in a courteous and reasonable manner by staff.
  
  I definately recommend this pub and its food and staff.
  
  P.S Pork Fillet and Pork Chops can be served medium rare, that is pink, with blood. Pork sausages and other cuts cannot. Look it up on the internet, I did.

  The Hamilton Russell gives the definite appearance of a chain pub, but isn't. You can not pre-book a table, and inside is a bit like a mid-west barn dance with 'authentic' candlelamps and wagon wheels. There is also a pool room and games machines in the back. The menu is not overly expensive, but is pretty basic fare although with lots of choice.
